3/29/10 Lady Hornets Soccer
Chillicothe 2, at St Paul's Concordia 1 |
The Lady Hornets finally getting to play after two cancellations,
were glad to get on the field for a game and literally glad to just
get on a field. Today was just the 5th time that they
have been on a soccer field all spring, thus meaning some of the
girls 5th time ever on a soccer field as well. Starting
right defender Addie Stottlemyre this was her very first soccer game
and she played well with limited time to figure out her defensive
role. All four on the back (Catherine Tipton, Brooke Westcott ,
Echo Followwill and Stottlemyre) took some time to adjust, but did
as the game progressed and was neat seeing them come together as a
unit. Freshman defender Followwill had a very good game and was
encouraging to see a young player with game smarts that she showed
tonight. Freshman Brooke Thomas and Leslee Moore logged several
minutes and played well for their first varsity match at midfield.
Thomas started and assisted the second and game winning goal.
The Lady Saints out shot the Lady Hornets 7 to 2 in the first half,
even though Chillicothe dominated the play for the last 25 minutes
of the game. The Lady Saints best scoring opportunity was ended
when the ball landed in an extra large puddle of water just above
the penalty area, just one of several wet areas on the field. After
this, the tides turned and the Lady Hornets dominated play in the
attacking third of the field, but were unable to mount any real good
scoring chances, other than possessing the ball the majority of the
time. The score at half was 0-0 and a lot of play in the middle
third of the field.
The second half started very similar, but a defensive mistake, by
not being able to clear the ball away allowed St. Paul’s to squeak a
shot past Meredith Brick to take the lead at the 50th
minute mark. It would not take the Lady Hornets long though to tie
the score on a good combination play from Rochelle Gillilan to
Cyrsten Lollar, who found Madeline Brick with a pass. Ma. Brick was
able to get a good shot off in the muddy conditions, glancing off
the keepers hands and into the goal to tie the score at the 54th
minute. Chillicothe fed off this conversion for the next several
minutes and it once again paid off with Brooke Thomas finding the
feet of Gillilan, who faked out the keeper and knotting the game
winning goal in the 68th minute. It was far from over as
the Lady Hornets were getting tired and the Lady Saints felt the let
down, but were able to get a goal, not without trying especially in
the last ten minutes of the game as Chillicothe’s attack was
non-existent. With the final whistle blowing, the Lady Hornets
carried away their first victory of the season, showing some good
things on the field as well as room for improvement. It was very
encouraging to see the play of newcomer Stottlemyre and Freshman
Lollar, Thomas, Moore and Followwill.
