4/9/10 Chillicothe 3, at Kirksville
2 |
The Lady Hornets came out strong firing on all cylinders for
the first 15 minutes if the game and had the Lady Tigers on the run,
but once again could not connect on a goal. The Lady Hornets seemed
anxious to get a shot off, instead of having the keeper commit on
the one and ones’. After the initial onslaught the Lady Hornets
laid down on the attack and had to fight off the increased attack of
Kirksville and all systems fell apart in the 22nd minute
when Kirksville was able to play the ball past our defense to set up
an easy goal against Meredith Brick, who was unsure of the three
attackers to guard. Chillicothe was able to gain a little composure
after that to help stop some of the attacks in Kirksville final
third. The score would stand at 1-0, with Chillicothe outshooting
the Lady Tigers 10-9, but most of these coming in the first 15
minutes
The second half would be quite different of a score line as all
was about seen. The Lady Hornets came out very sluggish and it
about paid off for them several times, but thanks to their
inaccurate shots, Chillicothe was able to stay in it. Around the 47th
minute a ball slid behind the
Kirksville
defense and Rochelle Gillilan was able to break free and this time
made the keeper commit and hit a nice ball past her and into the
net. This play helped the motivation of Chillicothe, in hand making
several runs in the attacking third while fending off some of
Kirksville, until the 62nd minute when Catherine Tipton
was called for a foul in the penalty area allowing Kirksville’s
Chelsea Clark to place the ball past Meredith Brick on a penalty
Kick for their second and go ahead goal. Chillicothe not letting
down and maybe even picking it up a notch were attacking the goal
when Madeline Brick in Kirksville penalty are was fouled in the
back, allowing for the Lady Tigers first penalty kick of the season,
where Rochelle Gillilan stepped to the mark and rifled one past Erin
Waddle for the tying Lady Hornets Goal in the 73rd
minute. It would not take long for Kirksville to get another chance
of going ahead, when Leslee Moore was whistled for a handball in the
penalty area, allowing
Kirksville
to step to the mark. This time Meredith Brick guessed right and
made a spectacular stop on the penalty shot, but then made another
very good stop on the rebounding shot, to preserve the 2-2 tie, with
less than 5 minutes left. These two stops in Coach Allison’s
eyes were the turning point for motivation to continue the attack on
a good
Kirksville
defense.
The attack was rewarded with a Direct Free Kick with about 3 minutes
left, just to the right of
Kirksville
goal and just outside their penalty area. Placing the ball was
Madeline Brick, who then made a brilliant shot past the Kirksville
defensive wall and keeper to gain the lead for
Chillicothe
for the first time all game. For the remainder of the game, 2-3
minutes,
Kirksville
poured it on in their attacking third, but came up empty handed.
This was a very physical game on both sides and
Chillicothe
ran into quite a bit of trash talking and language from the Lady
Tigers, something that they had not seen.
This was Chillicothe’ s third straight road game and managed to
pull off two wins, Lutheran of KC and Kirksville, losing to Benton.
The Lady Hornets seniors played a massive role in this game as
Catherine Tipton and Brooke Wescott made several saves on defense,
along with Me. Brick in goal. Up top was Rochelle Gillilan scoring
two goals and Madeline Brick gaining time in midfield and forward,
was an initial part of two goals, setting up the PK and the great
DFK to seal the deal.
