Savannah scored twice in the final 5:19 to come from behind
and beat the Chillicothe Hornets in front of a packed Savage
Homecoming crowd.
Chillicothe opened the scoring in the first when
a fumbled snap on 4th down gave the Hornets the ball on the 21
yard line. Nick Plummer scored the first of his three
touchdowns but the PAT kick was wide left. After forcing
Savannah to punt on the next drive, Chillicothe marched from
their own 20 to the Savannah 25 before they failed to convert
a 4th and 4.
The failed fourth down proved to be a turning point as
the Savages spent most of the 2nd quarter on offense, putting
together two scoring drives to lead 14-6 at halftime.
With Savannah keying on the Hornet running game, Junior
Quarterback Jacob Lewis went to the air. After completing just
one pass in two attempts for six yards in the first half,
Lewis finished with 172 yards and one touchdown in the air,
spreading six completions around to three receivers.
Plummer scored twice in the third on one yard runs only
to have Savannah take a 21-20 lead in the fourth. Lewis again
went to the air and found Guy Vinson for a 49 yard touchdown.
He threaded the needle on the PAT pass to give his team a
28-21 lead.
Following the kick off, Savannah marched 67 yards in 7
plays to tie the game at 28-28 with 5:16 left. Chillicothe
took over on the 23 following the kick off but had their drive
stall on the 39. A Blake Stephens punt gave Savannah the ball
on the 33 with 2:15 left in the game and a tie score.
It took the Savages less than 2 minutes to go the 67 yards,
highlighted by a 30 yard pass from Justin Roach to Blake Deal.
Three plays later Savannah scored with 29 seconds left.
Chillicothe picked up a first down, but on a
desperation heave on the final play, Lewis' pass was picked
off for the Hornets only turnover on the night. |
