season scores>
Chillicothe
used strong line play to dominate the Marshall Owls 40-12 in
the season opening football game. Chillicothe held Marshall to
just 24 plays and 63 total yards with 3 first downs before the
Hornet reserves went into the game midway through the 3rd
quarter and played the rest of the game against the Marshall
varsity.
Chillicothe scored on their opening possession on a 69
yard drive capped by a DJ Gannan 5 yard run, the first of
three straight scores by the Hornet reserve running back.
After forcing Marshall to three and out, the Hornets again
went to Gannan on the 1st play of the 2nd quarter on a 1 yard
run and a 2 point conversion.
The game turned ugly briefly in the 2nd quarter
when Cole Nichols recovered a fumble. On the next play,
Marshall recovered a fumble and on the ensuing play, Spencer
Hart tipped a pass from his Defensive End position then came
up with the interception for 3 turnovers on 3 straight plays.
Both teams settled down and Chillicothe finished
off a 10 play drive with Gannan's 3rd straight score. QB Jacob
Lewis went to the air on a late first half drive, ending the
half with a 9 yard touchdown to Trevor Reger.
Chillicothe stopped Marshall and got the ball back on
the Marshall 40 after a 4th and 2 was stopped by the Hornets.
It took 2 plays for Chillicothe's Lewis to find Guy Vinson for
a 41 yard strike to make it 34-0. Coach Willard started
clearing the bench following that and rested the starters for
the rest of the game.
Chillicothe Sophomore Cole Nichols found the end zone
from 2 yards out to make the score 40-0 in the 4th.
Marshall went to the air in the final 2:30,
hitting on a 6 yard pass and again on a 12 yard pass on the
final play of the game. The pass was tipped by one receiver
and caught in the end zone by a second receiver.
Marshall, who struggled with run-blocking all night,
lost their starting tail back and linebacker Marc Plummer on a
possible torn knee ligament early in the 2nd quarter. He was
just one of a host of players that went out with mostly leg
cramps due to the heat. Marshall has just two seniors on the
entire roster. |
