- Chillicothe 61, University Academy 56 OT
St Joseph LeBlond Tournament 3rd Place Game
<complete
season scores>
In basketball,
the free throw line can be your friend or your enemy. For
Chillicothe it was friendly but for KC University Academy it was
their worst nightmare. The Gryphons went just 14 of 27 from the
charity stripe in a 61-56 overtime Chillicothe victory in the
LeBlond 3rd Place Game.
U-Academy led all of the 1st and most of the 2nd
quarter before treys from Nate McKiddy and Tyler Clampitt gave the
Hornets the lead as part of an 11-1 run late in the 2nd quarter.
Chillicothe held the lead most of the second half
including a nine point lead early in the 4th quarter. However,
University Academy failed to roll over. The Gryphons mixed up a
patient passing game with a quick lay up game to cut into the
Hornets lead. Cameron Douglas hit two free throws late in the 4th to
give his Gryphons a one point lead and with 12 seconds left, Douglas
again went to the line. He made the first free throw to go up by 2
but missed the second. U.A. fouled Chillicothe's Ryan Smith fighting
for the rebound.
Smith made both shots in a double-bonus free throw
situation to tie the game. 11.9 seconds later the game went into
overtime. Despite the Gryphons come back in the 4th, the free throw
line was their Achilles heel, going just 9 of 17 from the charity
stripe in the quarter.
In overtime,
Smith won the tip, getting it to Tyler Clampitt who aid the ball in
for a two point lead. The Gryphons answered but Smith responded with
2:05 left when he scored, was fouled and turned in the three point
play. Chillicothe iced the overtime with two free throws by DJ
Gannan with 13.3 seconds left and two more by Nate McKiddy with 6.7
seconds left to lead by 7. A shot at the buzzer by University
Academy ended the game with a 61-56 Hornets win.
