On February
25th, 1910, the Chillicothe boys basketball team played their first
game in history with a 33-31 sudden death overtime loss to Trenton.
103 years and 187 meetings later, Chillicothe used treys, teamwork
and a timely charge to beat Trenton for the 120th time,
Chillicothe jumped on top early with the first 7 points
of the game. Treys by Tyler Clampitt and DJ Gannan, plus a fast
break one-handed dunk by Ryan Smith helped Chillicothe build a 19-7
lead after the first quarter. The lead remained 12 at the half, but
Trenton refused to roll over and play dead.
The Bulldogs, led by "Mr Perfect" Colby Larson led a
Bulldog come back that closed the gap to just two points in the
fourth quarter. Larson finished the game with 26 points including 10
of 10 field goals and 4 of 6 free throws.
With the lead cut to only two and just 3:20 left in the
game, Gillen Gates hit a low post jumper to build the lead to four
points. On Trenton's next possession, Gates again came up big when
he set up Trenton for a charging call. Clampitt then hit his fourth
trey in the game to make the lead 7 points and put Trenton away for
good.
Chillicothe's bench play was one of the differences,
with Nate McKiddy hitting 13 points and Gates 4. Trenton failed to
get any points from their four players off the bench. Both teams
shot well with Chillicothe hitting 62% from the floor and Trenton
hitting 65%. Chillicothe hit 8 treys in the game and had several
players with assists.
