Chillicothe’s
#1 doubles team of Wade Dietz and Chase Reeter made CHS history,
becoming the first Hornets to ever beat tennis players from private
school Kansas City Pembroke Hill in post season Boys Tennis. Dietz
and Reeter needed every ounce of strength and determination to pick
up the marathon two and a half hour, three set victory over the
Pembroke Hill duo. Dietz and Reeter won the first set 7-5. Pembroke
Hill blanked Chillicothe in the second set 6-love but Dietz and
Reeter regrouped, took a 5-2 lead with two match points, but ended
up winning the final set 7-6 thanks to a 7-3 tiebreaker with Dietz
finishing off the perennial powerhouse with an Ace service. The
Hornets duo now head to the state doubles tournament.
Hornets’ #2 doubles team of Grant Peterson and Johnson
Young lost 4-6, 1-6 to another Pembroke Hill doubles team. In
singles Chillicothe’s Gabe Poling lost to a Pembroke Hill player
1-6, 2-6
Coach Aaron Douglas was extremely proud of all of his
players. "Wow, today was a history making day, Chase and Wade won
their doubles match to advance to Springfield. This alone is a huge
accomplishment, but defeating Pembroke Hill to qualify for state has
never been done by a Chillicothe player. No CHS player has ever
defeated a Pembroke Hill player during the school year until now.
It's like knocking out Tyson in his prime, or dunking on Jordan. I'm
fairly certain Pembroke has won state as a team the last four years
and was once mentioned in ESPN the magazine for their outstanding
tennis program. It was a seemingly impossible feat, but our boys
elevated their play and shocked everyone that was watching at Noyes
Tennis Complex. Wade's performance was simply out of this world, and
Chase demonstrated he could play at an extremely high level as well.
CHS took the first set 7-5, but Pembroke began to reveal their true
abilities in the second set and hammered us 6-0. Our boys refused to
become discouraged and realized this was their last chance to
qualify for Springfield. They came out playing aggressive in the
third and eventually took a 5-2 lead with two match points.
Unfortunately, Pembroke fought off the attack and tied the set at 6
all. At this point, I was very nervous because it seemed like
Pembroke had finally regained their momentum. Yet chase and wade
played a superb tie breaker, and Wade finished off this highly
recognized private school with an ace! Wade and Chase beat Pembroke
7-5, 0-6, 7-6 (7-3) As they came off the court, my dad told wade and
chase that he had never been so proud of anyone, including his own
son! (ha)
Gabe played well (he lost 2-6, 2-6) and demonstrated
that he could hang with the most talented players in the state.
also, Johnson and Grant almost took the first set from their
Pembroke opponents (they lost 4-6, 2-6)! This is hard to believe
considering Johnson recently took up tennis."
