The Chillicothe Lady Hornets used the
free throw line to upset the Cameron Lady Dragons on the road
59-55. Technically it was Senior Night at Cameron, who have
just two Seniors neither of which get very much playing time.
Both started the game for the first few minutes before heading
to the bench for the rest of the game. To honor the two
seniors, the Cameron coach elected to let 5'2" Kelsey Mattox
jump for the opening tip off against Chillicothe's 5'11"
Senior Samantha McKiddy. She tipped it to Madison Williams who
took two dribbles and laid the ball off the glass and through
the hoop for the first Chillicothe points in the opening
seconds.
The game was intense and hotly contested with the lead
never growing beyond single digits for either team. Cameron
had a four point halftime lead but Chillicothe tied the game
after three quarters.
Chillicothe took the lead with under three minutes left
in the game with a Maggie Graves basket. Free throws, and a
steal and lay-up by Erin Gilliland gave Chillicothe a four
point lead with 1:42 left. With 17 seconds left in the game a
Cameron basket closed it to with in two points for third time.
Following a Cameron time out, Chillicothe was
called for traveling on the in-bounds play. Cameron had an
uncontested low post shot from the left side from point guard
Melia Richardson and with 5 seconds left, Post player Taylor
Hamilton missed from the right side low post. A Chillicothe
rebound and Cameron foul put Maggie Graves at the line with
3.1 seconds left. Graves hit both free throws to secure the
win for Chillicothe. The Lady Hornets went 8 of 10 from the
free throw line in the fourth quarter.
