Reeling from a third straight loss at the hands of
Excelsior Springs on Thursday, the Chillicothe Lady Hornets Soccer
team returned to Litton Stadium on Monday hoping to notch their
first win of the season against St. Joe Benton. The home fans were
not disappointed as Chilli came out on top by a score of 4-2.
The Hornets went on the offensive early scoring in the
fourth minute on a nice shot from forward Lindy Saunders. They
continued to press the attack sending several shots which were
thwarted by the either the Benton goalkeeper or the goalpost. In
the 37th minute, Sam Baldwin collected a loose ball in
front of the goal and put the ball in the back of the net to make
the score 2-0 at halftime.
Chillicothe came out a little flat in the second half
and allowed a breakaway goal in the 50th minute but the
Hornets responded quickly when Saunders drove to the goal and
dropped a pass to an oncoming Baldwin who hit a wickedly spinning
shot past the keeper. For the next ten minutes Chillicothe launched
a barrage of shots toward the St. Joe goal but just couldn't
connect. Then Benton struck again when the Hornet defense fell
asleep and allowed Benton's Savannah Domann into space where she
scored her second goal. In the 76th minute midfielder
Leslee Moore was fouled in the penalty area and the ensuing kick was
blasted past the Benton keeper by Saunders for her second goal.
"This was the first game that we looked really
comfortable at our positions. Our midfield was outstanding; Leslee
Moore, Megan Dominique and Brooke Thomas all had great games. Our
offense was aggressive and our defense, with the exception of a
couple of hiccups, played well", said Coach Lance Harvey.
