It took three hours and
three sets, but Chillicothe Sophomore Syndie Whiteside became the
first Chillicothe Lady Hornets Tennis player since 2008 to win the
MEC Singles Championship. The undefeated Whiteside beat last year's
champion and State Qualifier Cami Pendleton 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 in the
finals of the tournament in St Joseph. Assistant coach Ed Douglas,
who was the Boys Head Coach for 11 years, called it "The greatest
tennis match I've ever seen." Head Coach Aaron Douglas said
Whiteside was down several games in the third set before coming back
for the win.
Savannah's
Jessica Cornelius suffered a double dose of the Hornets sting,
falling to Whiteside in the semifinals, then losing to Chillicothe
Sophomore Ali Stephens in the third place match.
In doubles play, Chillicothe's Chelsea Long and Jozie
Reeter finished fourth, falling to LeBlond's Kristin Gronniger and
Taylor Faucett in the third place match. Chillicothe's Kelly
Westphal and Steffany Gramenz lost their first match, won their
second then lost their third match and did not place.
The Tournament was individuals only, and no team scores
were kept. Chillicothe won the Midland Empire Conference crown
earlier this week by finishing undefeated in MEC play.
