Chillicothe used a good defense, turnovers and field
position to shut out the Marshall Owls 21-0 at Marshall in
the season opener.
Marshall threatened early with a long punt return
to the Hornets 12 yard line. Three plays later Chillicothe
Sophomore Kyle Ross intercepted a Marshall pass,
Chillicothe failed on a fourth down in the 1st quarter to
stall a drive at the six yard line. Marshall took over,
ran 16 plays but also had their drive stopped at the 15.
The Hornets scored late in the second quarter on
a 73 yard drive that included a 32 yard pass play from
Tyler Clampitt to Zach Alperin. Tyler Long, who led the
ground game for the Hornets with 15 carries for 83 yards,
had a 9 yard touchdown with 35 seconds left in the half.
Alperin, who went 3 for 3 in PATs, made the score 7-0 at
the half,
The Hornet defense line led the charge Through out the
game, with several quarterback sacks and pressures to keep
Marshall at bay.
After forcing Marshall to punt in the 3rd quarter,
Sophomore Mason Hayward returned it into Marshall
territory. A Marshall flag on the return gave the Hornets
the ball on the 17 yard line. Another Marshall penalty
gave Chillicothe 1st and 5 at the 12 yard line. DeEll
Midgyett swept right, turned the corner and sprinted to
the end zone.
Marshall's best scoring threat came on the next
series when they ran 12 plays to the 1 yard line only to
fumble the ball with Hornets Linebacker Cole Nichols
recovering the ball.
A desperate Marshall team tried going to the air
with a new Quarterback in the fourth, only to throw
interceptions to Tyler Clampitt and Cole Nichols. Clampitt
retuned it 37 yards to the 7 yard line, then called his
own number on the next play for the final score. A Cole
Nichols interception late in the game gave the Hornets the
ball at the 23. Chillicothe ran three plays to the 3 yard
line then kneeled on the ball for the final play of the
game. |
