Extra
points and the fourth quarter spelled doom for the
Chillicothe Hornets in a 2 point loss at Smithville.
Chillicothe missed one extra point, had a second one
blocked and failed on a two point conversion in the 29-27
loss.
Chillicothe led 20-9 heading into the fourth quarter,
but couldn't stop Smithville Senior Running Back Nolan
Gromacki, who had three touchdowns and 102 of his 173
yards in the fourth quarter,
Chillicothe held Smithville on the game's opening drive
and responded with a 70 yard drive and a 7 yard Tyler Long
run. Smithville answered on a 36 yard pas splay early in
the second to tie the game only to have Chillicothe
respond with a 3 yard Tyler Clampitt run to cap a 76 yard
drive. The PAT was blocked.
Chillicothe held Smithville to a 37 yard field goal on
the next drive, but couldn't respond themselves. The
Hornets Tyler Clampitt quick kicked with no one back for
Smithville and Zach Alperin sprinted downfield to down the
ball at the one. On the second play for Smithville, Luke
Plummer and Lake Still tackled the quarterback in the end
zone for a 14-9 lead at the half
It was a battle of defenses for much of the third
quarter before Chillicothe stopped Smithville on a 4th
down at mid field to take over at the 49. 4 plays later
Long had his second touchdown. The half back pass
conversion failed and it was 20-9.
In the fourth quarter it was all Smithville until the
final drive. Gromacki scored on runs of 2, 19 an 1 to take
a 29-20 lead while holding Chillicothe to minus four yards
rushing in the fourth quarter. Clampitt did complete 5 of
6 passes for 81 yards on the final drive of the game
including a 12 yard touchdown pass to Gillian Gates with
19 seconds left. An on-sides kick was recovered by
Smithville to end the game.
Chillicothe played with out leading tackler and
offensive guard Cole Nichols due to illness/injury and
played the second half with out DeEll Midgyett, was was
injured late in the second quarter. |
