Lady Hornets Head
Coach Ed Douglas says: " The Hornets lost a very close
"heartbreaker" match to Marshall 5-4 that lasted until after 8
pm last night. The match as it turned out came down to only
one point. Sydnie Whiteside came from behind to win at #1
10-8. " Syd was done 4-0 against a really good player from
Marshall. My son Aaron bet a guy at that point that Sydnie
would come back and win and sure enough she did. Sydnie was
39-1 last year and undefeated this year so it is a pretty good
bet whatever the score. But it was very tough with Sydnie
being down 8-7 before pulling it out in a 2 hour and 20 minute
match." Ali Stephens dominated in her match 10-1 at #2. " I
wished we could have used a few of Ali games in other places
but that is not how it works." Marshall is very deep and they
won fairly convincingly at 3, 4 and 6. "Our girls played fine
at those positions but Marshall is really deep." At number 5
Chelsea Long played very well and built a lead but the
Marshall girl dug her way out of a whole. Chelsea had two
match points at 9-8 but it just didn't happen. " Chelsea
didn't lose it, the other gal just didn't miss at that point".
" Chelsea played her heart out to put us in that position but
sometimes it just doesn't happen. That's tennis." Whiteside
and Long came back to win the #1 doubles 8-6 in a very good
match. The girls were down 6-5 and the team match was decided
at that point but they both played with a lot of pride to beat
a very good #1 doubles team which says a lot about our girls
character and heart. " Stephens and Reeter also played well to
win 8-5 at #2 doubles. Sydnie and Ali both won two matches
which is all they can do. "I was very proud of how all the
girls played. They played with heart and pride and came as
close as possible without winning." "They represented us very
well". "We knew it would be a very tough match based on their
depth but we almost pulled it out. The Hornets are know 3-1
for the season." |
