Coach Ed Douglas:
"The Lady Hornets had a big win Friday in St Joe winning the 8 team Savannah/Benton Invitational.
The Hornets the #2 seed defeated LeBlond in the first round 5-0 and then Benton in the Semifinals 5-0 before facing Platte County the #1 seed in the finals. Platte County is coached by Zach Keith former standout player for the Hornets.
“Zach was one of the best players in Chillicothe tennis history. His dad and I coached him for four years. He played on some really good teams with my son’s Jared and Aaron and Zach’s brother Clint, all Hornet standouts Zach qualified for the State tournament three times and finished third in the State in Singles one year and then played four years at Northwest Mo State University. I can tell you he is an equally good coach as he was a player and his teams are always well prepared and coached.”
Platte County was undefeated going into this tournament and they beat us last year in the finals. Zach told me that they were a much better team this year than last year team. So we knew we needed a big effort to win. And although the final score ended with Chillicothe winning 3-2 it really wasn’t that close. In this format the first three matches to play were #1 singles, #2 singles and #1 doubles with the #2 and #3 doubles to be played as courts became available.
With the #2 player in the State playing at #1 singles you put that in the victory column almost when the match starts and Sydnie Whiteside produced as expected beating a good Platte County #1 player 10-1. We moved Ali Stephens, # 4 in the State last year to #1 doubles to give us the best match ups against a very good #1 Platte County team that had a bunch of really good wins this year. But Ali dominated and Jozie Reeter, her doubles partner played extremely well also.
Our girls got on top early and you could tell the sister team of Laures and Laures was starting to have some friendly sibling discussions. Stephens and Reeter went on to steam roll the match 10-3. Probably the #2 singles match was the match that might have had been a coin toss going into the match and we knew we needed to win it.
Kelly Westphal won the first three games that all went to no add in this no add tournament and she won all three getting off to a 3-0 start. From there she never looked back and also won decisively 10-2. So when the last two matches went on we had won the first three 10-1, 10-2, 10-3 handily and it was all over but the shouting.
#2 doubles team players Renee Downing and Chelsea Long almost won that match losing a very close 11-9 match and the # 3 doubles team of Julia Minnis and Kiara Botts lost in a very respectable 10-6 to finish the match at 3-2.
“In addition to being having Coached Zach for four years, my assistant coach Amanda Hardie played on the girls team at Northwest and was actually recruited by the Northwest Coach on a recommendation from Zach. If I had to lose to somebody I would just as soon it be Zach, but having said that both Amanda and I would rather win against him than lose to him if given the choice. Our girls played extremely well and Coach Marsh and I were very proud of them”
Individually, Sydnie Whiteside won the #1 singles with wins wins over Savannah Sanai LeBlond 10-0, Aubrie Silvey Benton 10-0 and Hannah Fowler Platte County 10-1.
Kelly Westphal won the #2 Singles with wins over Danica Gall 10-0, Nicole Bonham 10-2 and Rachel Valentine 10-2 (same schools for each of our players) .
Ali Stephens and Jozie Reeter won the #1 doubles with wins over Nancy Bai/Katie Joel 10-1, Christine Brown and Destiny Murphy 10-6 and Shelly and Stephanie Laures 10-3.
Chelsea Long and Renee Downing won second at #2 doubles with wins over Sarah Aberer and Jaileigh Hamlin 10-0,, Mika Betts and Ellen Adams 10-2 and losing 11-9 to Madalyn Ivy and Jordan Walker.
The team of Julie Minnis and Kiara Botts finished 3rd in their division with wins over Jamie Squires and Liz Robinson 10-3, Kiri Mignery and Calin Syley 10-2 and a finals lost to Dana Swisher and Madi Hale 6-10.
The Hornets team record improved to 7-1 for the season. Next week is a busy week with home matches Monday, Wednesday and Thursday against Lexington, Kirksville and Benton.
