L to R Lane Bonderer & Cody Evans - 3rd place doubles, Brandon Lamp and Nate McKiddy 1st place doubles

Story by Coach Bob Long
The Chillicothe Hornets Tennis team (12-5) competed in individual district tennis on Saturday in Excelsior Springs. Carrollton, Richmond, Trenton, Cameron, Chillicothe and hosts Excelsior Springs participated, with the top two singles and doubles teams advancing to sectionals. Chillicothe has already won the team district and will play Pembroke Hill (not LeBlond) on Saturday, May 21 in Kansas City. Nate McKiddy and Brandon Lamp return to sectional play by winning the doubles. Nate has won the district doubles championship in all three of his tennis seasons (two with Garrett Peterson and now with Brandon). Brandon advanced to sectional doubles with teammate Cody Evans in 2015. Nate and Brandon with the number one seed, received a bye in the first round. After a long wait, they defeated Robert Bremer and Tyler Anderson of Cameron by a score of 6-0, 6-1. Hugs and congratulations were exchanged when the Dragon duo collected the one after Nate and Brandon had won ten straight. Now with open courts and opponents in the wings, Seniors Nate and Brandon moved on beating Aden Allen and Jacob Crouse of Excelsior Springs 6-3, 6-2. In the final, the Hornets faced Gage Zeit and David Curtis of Cameron. Nate McKiddy and Brandon Lamp had defeated the Dragon teammates 8-2 in team districts this past Wednesday. This occasion wasn't any different, 6-0, 6-1 for Chillicothe. The Hornet pair is 21-6 in doubles this season.
The other Chillicothe doubles team of Lane Bonderer and Cody Evans received the number three seed and a first round bye. Lane and Cody beat Dylan Ohrt and Colton Baker of Richmond 6-0, 6-1 in the second round. Lane and Cody faced Gage Zeit and David Curtis in the semi-finals. After losing the opening set 3-6, Seniors Bonderer and Evans won the second set decisively 6-0. Keeping the momentum, the Hornets ran out to a 3-1 lead and a point away from 4-1. The winds turned once again, Zeit and Curtis rebounded winning the final five games for a 6-3, 0-6, 6-3 victory. In true Hornet fashion, despite the disappointing loss, Lane and Cody played their best in the third place match, defeating Aden Allen and Jacob Crouse 8-5. Lane is 23-8 in doubles on the season and Cody is 20-7. Cody placed second in doubles in 2015.
In singles, Max Anderson and Colton Webb each lost in their first round. Colton lost 3-6, 0-6 to Cameron Senior Andrew Pratt. Pratt had defeated Webb earlier this season and has a perfect 4-0 singles record against Chillicothe. Max Anderson drew Trenton's number two player Nick Shields. The pair battled back and forth in the first set, fighting each other and the wind. Shields came up with his best service game when he needed to and won the first set 7-5. Unable to regain control, Anderson lost the second set 2-6 to a confident Shields.
Nate McKiddy and Brandon Lamp compete Monday, May 16 in St Joseph at 4:00 p.m.. They will face Peter Kempf and Brady Archer of Maryville, with the winner receiving an invite to the state tournament in Springfield May 27 and 28. Excelsior's Lane Rogers and Seth Forstner played in the singles final, and both will advance to sectionals to face Steven Mears and John Lierz of LeBlond. Cameron's second place team of Gage Zeit and David Curtis will face Joe Suchan and Trystan Lyle of Maryville. The Hornets' team will play at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday.
