It was the Bryce Young show as the Hornet Senior Halfback had
12 carries for 209 yards (all in the first half), one catch
for 45 yards, completed his only pass for 22 yards, had 85
kick return yards, scored three rushing and one receiving
touchdowns and had a turnover on defense.
Young's first touch of the ball was a sign of things to
come when he returned the opening kick off 65 yards to the
Grain Valley 27 yard line. Seven plays later Chillicothe
missed a 33 yard field goal.
After halting a Grain Valley drive and forcing them to
punt, it took Young just one play to run 90 yards for his
first touchdown. Three minutes later a six play drive ended
with a Young 43 yard touchdown with 2:15 left in the first.
Chillicothe wasn't done. Linebacker A. J. VanHoutan recovered
a Grain Valley fumbled pitch out to give Chillicothe the ball
on the 35 yard line. 3 plays later, Fullback Brett
Stephens plunged over from the 1 yard line with 26 seconds
left to give the Hornets a 21-0 lead after one quarter.
Grain Valley started the second quarter with an 11 play
80 yard drive when Trace Goade ran it in from the two yard
line. The Hornets answered nine plays later with another Bryce
Young touchdown, this one from 8 yards away.
An Austin Gouldsmith to Zach Hoover 12 yard touchdown pass
gave the Eagles new life, down 28-14 at the half and opening
the 3rd quarter on offense.
With the ball to start the 3rd quarter, Grain Valley threw an
interception on the fifth play. Two plays later Chillicothe's
Jared McCauslin found Young for a 45 yard touchdown strike to
run the score to 35-14. The Hornets scored late in the 3rd on
a quarterback keeper and in the fourth when McCauslin
found Josh Rockhold in the end zone for a 14 yard touchdown fr
a 49-14 score.
Grain Valley's final touchdown drive in the fourth
quarter came when their varsity drove 72 yards on the
Chillicothe reserves for the final 49-21 score.
