10/2/09
- Maryville 7, at Chillicothe 0
In a pre-game interview, Maryville Coach Chris Holt said for
his team to be successful, the Spoofhounds would have to stop
the Hornets running game and force them to pass. That's
exactly what happened as Maryville controlled the line of
scrimmage to hold the Hornets to 34 carries for just 76 yards
rushing and 8 of 18 for 77 yards passing.
Chillicothe took the ball on the opening drive and
drove to the 14 yard line on a 2nd and 9 before a 15 yard
penalty forced a third down from the 29. Two straight
incomplete passes halted that drive. Turnovers and penalties
would be the story of much of the game, with both teams
turning the ball over twice.
The Hornets drove to the 23 on their second possession only
to have the drive stopped by a penalty. Maryville also had
chances, driving to the 6 yard line on a 4th and goal late in
the first half only to come up 2 yards shy of the goal line.
The game winning drive was set up by a Gavin Talmadge
interception. Seven plays and 69 yards later Derek DeMott
scored from 9 yards away. Chillicothe tried to respond,
driving to the seven yard line only to have two passes fall
incomplete to end the scoring threat.
Maryville finished with 227 yards rushing, with 110 of those
yards coming on three plays. Chillicothe now stands at 5-1
overall and 2-1 in conference play while Maryville is 5-1
overall and 5-0 in MEC play. |
