- Chillicothe 29, at Smithville 22
Chillicothe overcame a "leapfrog" penalty, a 14 point
1st quarter deficit and a 4th and 24 to come from behind and
beat Smithville 29-22 and advance to the playoffs.
Chillicothe failed to pick up a first down on their
opening drive and punted. It took Smithville just one pass
play to cover 75 yards and score. Smithville scored again late
in the 1st on a 29 yard fullback run to lead 14-0.
Two officials timeouts made for a lengthy second
quarter. First, officials stopped play to clean debris off the
turf using the
water coolers from the Smithville sidelines. However, that
left ice on the field. Play continued to be halted while
brooms were brought out to sweep the ice from the playing
field. An 8 yard pass to Alex Thompson closed the gap in the
2nd. Later in the quarter, McCauslin completed a pass to
Rockhold, who on the run after catch, hurdled over a
prospective tackler. After a lengthy officials conference that
included checking with the official rule book, Chillicothe was
issued a penalty, moving the ball from the 8 back to the 27
yard line.
After a 54 yard run by Bryce Young for Chillicothe tied
the game in the third quarter, Chillicothe's Alex Thompson
picked off an Eric Gromacki pass and ran 73 yards for the
go-ahead score. Smithville battled back in the fourth quarter
to score on a 17 yard run and a 2 point conversion to lead
22-21 with 8 minutes left.
Chillicothe put together a 13 play 80 yard drive that
included converting a 4th and 24 on the 34 yard line. Two
plays later a pass
to Blake Stephens down inside the one set up a Quarterback
keeper for Chillicothe. A two point conversion for the Hornets
gave them the win and second place in the district.
Chillicothe plays on the road on Wednesday. |
