It was a tale
of two halves Monday afternoon as the Lady Hornets soccer team faced
St. Paul Lutheran of Concordia and fell by a score of 8-0.
Chillicothe came out a bit sluggish and immediately paid the price
as midfielder Emilie Sandven crossed a shot into the wide side of
the Hornet net with only three minutes gone in the half. That opened
the gates for St. Paul who scored again in the sixth minute and
continued push their forwards past the Hornet back line to tally
five more goals in the half.
The second half was a different story as the Lady
Hornets utilized a halftime midfield adjustment to ease the pressure
on the defense and goalkeeper Cyrsten Lollar. With the new alignment
the Hornets allowed a single goal in the second half. Lollar, a
sophomore competing in just her fifth varsity start overcame an
extremely rough first half to post eleven saves. Coach Lance Harvey
noted that Lollar was much more commanding and aggressive in
quarterbacking the Chillicothe defense after halftime.
Even though the game was out of reach, Chillicothe’s
women never stopped competing and Coach Harvey recognized the
outstanding play of forward Jordan Gardner, who used creative
touches and great hustle to open several opportunities for other
players. Harvey also pointed to the play of midfielder Kylie Barton
and forward Lacey Nibarger who both created scoring opportunities in
the second half. The Lady Hornets will have little time to rest as
they play a very tough Smithville team at Smithville on Tuesday
night.
