Conventional wisdom in sports says that it is always difficult to
beat a team three times in a row and Tuesday night at Danner Park it
looked as if that adage would prove true, as Chillicothe attempted
to defeat Cameron for the third time in as many outings.
Cameron came out fast scoring in the eleventh minute on
a big 30 yard shot by Leslie Hutton. The Dragons’ offense continued
to put pressure on the Lady Hornets but was unable to add to their
tally in the first half. With a renewed sense of urgency after
halftime, Chillicothe was aggressive going toward the Cameron goal
and their tenacity paid off when forward Lacey Nibarger drove toward
the goal and put a shot past the Cameron keeper to even the score
with eight minutes gone in the second half.
Cameron answered five minutes later on a goal by
forward Brenna Lobb to put the Dragons up 2-1. Chillicothe evened up
the contest again when forward Kylie Barton sent a beautiful cross
to the foot of Nibarger who coolly finished with a right footed shot
from in front of the goal. Regulation would end with the score
knotted at two apiece.
In overtime both teams squandered scoring
opportunities and the game went to penalty kicks. Shooting first,
Barton buried her PK into the left side of the net to give the Lady
Hornets the lead. The rest of the shootout was a battle of attrition
as each of the next nine shots for both teams missed the mark. With
one last chance to tie, Cameron shooter Shaylee Clardy sent her
attempt over the goal giving Chillicothe its fourth win of the
season.
Coach Lance Harvey said it was a great win and a real
confidence booster as Chillicothe gets ready for district play next
