Chillicothe's Guy Vinson rushed 20 times for 201 yards and two
touchdowns, but it was Quarterback Jacob Lewis' 2 yard carry
with 32 seconds left in the game that gave the Chillicothe
Hornets a 28-24 win over a determined St Joseph LeBlond team.
After two Chillicothe punts and one LeBlond punt in the first
three drives and exchanging turnovers, LeBlond drew first
blood after they recovered a Chillicothe fumble and returned
it to the 13 yard line. 3 plays later the Golden Eagles led
7-0.
Chillicothe answered with a drive to the one yard line,
but two straight stops by LeBlond, a Chillicothe penalty and a
Quarterback sack on 4th down gave LeBlond the ball following
the goal-line stand.
Chillicothe held and forced a LeBlond punt. The Hornets
scored first on a 17 yard Guy Vinson run 6 plays later to tie
the score late in the 2nd. LeBlond had enough time to drive 63
yards in just over a minute to score and take a 14-7 lead into
halftime.
LeBlond started the second half when Joe Voltmer caught
a short pass and was crushed by the Hornet defenders. Jacob
Lewis returned the Voltmer fumble down to the 39 and 3 plays
later, DJ Gannan tied the game in the 3rd quarter.
LeBlond tried a pass off a fake punt that fell
incomplete on the next drive, and it took a hand off to Vinson
to cover the 42 yards for a 21-14 Hornet lead.
The Golden Eagles put together an 18 play, 7 minute
drive that led to a field goal and a 21-17 Chillicothe lead.
After holding the Hornets and forcing them to punt, LeBlond
took over on the 20 yard line and drove 80 yards to score on a
35 yard Mathew McCullough to Voltmer pass for a 21-24 lead
with just under 2 minutes left in the game.
Lewis threw an incompletion on the first play from the
36 yard line, then used 3 running plays, a short pass and two
more running plays before calling his own number from 2 yards
away for the winning touchdown with 32 seconds left.
LeBlond completed three of four passes after the kick
off but ran out of time. The game was ugly at times, with
LeBlond losing 2 fumbles, Chillicothe losing one fumble and
the Hornets with more than 100 yards of penalties, not
including two cases of off-setting flags.
