10/21/11
- at Chillicothe 41, Cameron 6
When you close out an 80 year old football stadium, you want
to do it "old school" style, and that's exactly what
Chillicothe did in a 41-6 win over Cameron in what likely will
be the last game played at the history structure.
On a night to honor Seniors, it was a Junior that was
standing tall, putting his name in the record books. Junior
Fullback DJ Gannan had 25 carries for 199 yards and five
touchdowns for the Hornets. The 5 rushing touchdowns ties a
"modern day" record shared by six players, most recently by
Justin Walter in 1997. The school record dates back to 1909
when a player scored six.
Gabe Jeffries scored first when QB Tyler Clampitt
fumbled the ball on a running play in the end zone for the
offensive fumble recovery touchdown. Then Gannan took over
with touchdowns of 10 and 1 yards in the 1st, 31 and 7 yards
in the 2nd and 4 yards in the third.
Since 5 touchdowns, 25 carries and 199 yards
wasn't enough of a work load, Gannan also picked off three
passes, which tied him for second place with 4 others, most
recently in 2005 by Brett Johnson.
The Hornets used the game plan that made them famous:
run, run and run again, ramming the football down the heart of
the Cameron defense. Chillicothe rushed for 321 yards on 45
carries and didn't attempt a pass until the second half.
Cameron started the game by throwing an interception on
their third play. On their next drive, they picked up three
first downs before throwing another interception, again to
Gannan.
On their third possession, it was Austin Hatfield that
blocked a punt back to the five yard line. Chillicothe took 2
plays to take a 21-0 lead late in the 1st quarter.
Cameron continued to fight, scoring their only
touchdown on a 42 yard pass.
Chillicothe continued the Gannon-fest with two more touchdowns
and his third interception, this one in the end zone to end
the first half leading 35-6. Cameron's Quarterback Zach Way
suffered a shoulder injury on a vicious hit by an aggressive
Hornets defense late in the 1st half and never returned to the
field.
The Dragon woes continued in the 3rd when two plays
after the Hornets final Gannan touchdown, the Hornets again
had the ball on a Cole Nichols fumble recovery.
The Hornets did lose the football on a fumble
early in the 4th but Cameron failed to score off the turnover.
Chillicothe is now 4-5 overall, 2-5 in MEC play
and 1-1 in district play. |
