Regional Play Off Game
Richmond Tailback Gabe Vandiver had 198 yards rushing in the
first quarter and ended with 20 carries, 285 yards and five
touchdowns to guide his Spartan team to a 42-8 regional play
off win over Chillicothe. While Vandiver's name will be in the
record books, it was the Spartan offensive line that opened
huge holes for Vandiver all night long.
The Hornets were never in the game after being
down 14-0 before the Hornet offense even stepped on the field.
Richmond's Vandiver sprinted through a huge hole on the left
side of the line and ran 70 yards on the first play of the
game to give Richmond a 6-0 lead.
The Spartans, kicked into a strong wind and
a driving rainstorm, pooched a short kick which then bounced
back towards Richmond, which recovered the on-sides kick. Five
plays later Richmond was again in the end zone with a 14-0
lead.
Once Chillicothe's offense was finally allowed on
the field, they proved highly ineffective. The Richmond
defensive line and Chillicothe's numerous fumbles due to a wet
football kept the Hornets attack stalled, picking up their
first 1st down of the game with 8:25 left in the game. Their
only other 1st down was picked up three plays later when
Austin Hatfield scored the Hornets only touchdown to make the
final score 42-8.
Vandiver picked up 198 yards and three touchdowns
in the first quarter on runs of 70, 27 and 14 yards. He picked
up scores of 25 and 41 yards in the 3rd quarter. Fullback
Jimmy Hamm had the other touchdown in the 2nd quarter. Spartan
QB Kyle Carroll attempted just one pass which was incomplete.
Hornets QB Tyler Clampitt threw five, but all were also
incomplete.
The Hornets lost just two fumbles in the game,
one on a fourth down and one on a kick off return. However,
they had problems holding onto the ball in the rain all night.
Chillicothe finished with just 32 yards of offense which
included 35 yards on their final drive of the game, which
resulted in their only touchdown.
In a unique turn of events, Chillicothe elected
to kick off at the start of both halves and have the wind at
their backs. Both times, Richmond ended up in the end zone.
Chillicothe managed just 18 offensive plays to
Richmond's 51, and had 32 yards of offense to Richmond's 400.
The Spartans improve to 10-1 while Chillicothe ends 5-6. |
