(Story by Lance Harvey)
The Chillicothe
girls soccer team avenged an earlier loss to Cameron with a 2-1 road
victory on Tuesday night. The Lady Hornets battled the Lady Dragons
and the wind in the first half and kept the game scoreless until
Cameron's Brenna Lobb redirected a carom off the post into the back
of the Chilli net to make the score 1-0.
Unfazed, Chillicothe's tenacity on the offensive end
was rewarded near the end of the half when freshman forward Lindy
Saunders beat her defender off the dribble and fired a shot past the
Cameron keeper to even the score.
The second half should have been favorable for the Lady
Hornets as they had the wind at their backs, however, Cameron
controlled the ball for most of the frame and were within inches of
scoring as they sent two shots on goal which both deflected off the
goal post. Finally, with five minutes left, Chillicothe's defense
sent the ball forward to Saunders who again beat her defender and
passed into the penalty are to an onrushing Kylie Barton. The senior
forward made a nice first touch and blasted a low shot into the net
to make the score 2-1.
Toward the end of the game Chillicothe's defense
stiffened and cleared several balls out of their area to secure the
victory.
"This was a total team victory but my hat goes off to
junior Brooke Thomas, who was assigned the nearly impossible task of
shutting down their standout forward, Anna Curtis. Brooke played one
of the toughest games I've ever seen. She rose to the occasion like
no other." Harvey also complimented the goalkeeper play of junior
Cyrsten Lollar, commending her for her quick reactions and great
field communication. |
