The Chillicothe Hornets had
a slow start but a strong finish to beat St Joseph Benton 53-50 in
the district tournament opener. Chillicothe didn't make their
first field goal until 2:00 minutes left in the first quarter.
However Wade Dietz hit a trey at the buzzer to cut the Benton lead
from nine to six.
Chillicothe continued to whittle away at the Benton
lead in the second. Benton hit one of three treys in the second
quarter to lead by two. Chillicothe's Tyler Clampitt hit a shot from
top of the key and was fouled at the halftime buzzer. After the free
throw, Chillicothe took a two point lead into the half and they
would never trail again.
Both teams turned up the heat in the final two minutes
when Benton's 6-5 Freshman Macio Harris had a steal at mid court and
finished it with a two handed slam to close the game to one. With
30.7 seconds left Clampitt hit broth ends of a 1-and-1 to give his
Hornets a 4 point lead. Following a Benton time out, Fabian Smith
hit a basket and was fouled to turn a three point play and close the
game to one.
The Hornets freshman Mason Hayward was fouled with 7.9
seconds left. Hayward calmly drained both shots of a 1-1 to take a
three point lead. A Benton shot from the left wing by F. Smith
failed to drop and Chillicothe ended Benton's season.
Clampitt finished 5 of 7 from behind the arc as
part of a career high 26 points. It was also the most points by a
single Hornets player this season.
Chillicothe takes on top seed Lafayette in
Thursday's semi-final game.
