(Story by Coach Lance Harvey)
Looking rusty from a six day layoff,
the Chillicothe Lady Hornets had a difficult time in their attempt
to defeat St. Joe Benton for a third time this season. Eventually,
the Hornets posted a 5-2 victory on the Cardinals home turf.
After falling behind by a goal early, the Hornets evened the score
on freshman Natalie Minnick's goal. Minnick intercepted a goal kick,
dribbled toward the net and sent a low shot past the Benton keeper.
Coming out of halftime the Chilli went on the
offensive, sending several shots on goal. The Hornets scored their
second goal when freshman Mariah Cox ran onto a loose ball and got
just enough leg on it to beat the keeper. The Hornets scored again
soon after as junior Miranda Mammen collected a long pass and coolly
kept a defender on her back as she dribbled toward goal and fired a
shot into the back of the net. A few minutes later sophomore Lindy
Saunders added her 15th goal of the season (assisted by Minnick) on
a shot that the keeper mishandled into the goal.
Benton added a second goal to stay close but
Chillicothe put the game away late on Mammen's second goal of the
game which was assisted by Cox
Goalkeeper Jaylene Sturguess recorded 6 saves playing
behind a solid defense of Carly Anderson, Hallee Jones and Bailey
The Hornet's record now stands at 5-9
