From Coach Bob Long:
The Chillicothe Hornets varsity tennis team returned to Cameron Thursday, May 15 to compete in individual district play. Despite only having one seeded player (Gabe Poling) the Hornets walked away with three of the four sectional invitations.
Gabe Poling defeated Zane Beattie of Savannah 6-1, 6-0; Michael Farlow of Maryville 6-0, 6-0; and won the District Championship for the second straight year by beating his teammate, Nathan Sims, 6-0, 6-1. Nathan Sims, benefiting from other number one players avoiding singles because of Gabe, finished second and will be playing in sectionals on Monday.
Nathan defeated Daniel Rogers of Cameron 6-1, 6-1; Tate Mattison of Maryville 6-4, 6-4; Sandy Kennyn of Savannah in a three hour battle 6-2, 6-7 (5-7), 7-5; and was rewarded with a final against Gabe.
Nate McKiddy and Garrett Peterson defeated the fourth, first, and second seeds to take home the District Doubles Champion title. After both teams received a bye, Nate and Garrett played Wilson Utley and Chanse Houghton of Trenton, the same pair they had defeated in a tie-breaker in the team dual. Nate and Garrett prevailed slightly easier 6-1, 6-3. Next up the MEC doubles champs and district number one seed Ian Macali and Michael Filips of Maryville. Leading the entire match McKiddy and Peterson won 6-4, 6-3. In the District final the hornet duo faced Trenton's number one team of Isaiah Swann and Alex Davis. The Chillicothe pair trailed closely in the first set, eventually losing 4-6. In the second, they led 4-1, but the Bulldog team made it close, 7-5. The final set went back and forth, and fittingly went to a tie-breaker. Nate and Garrett stormed out to a 5-2 lead, the eighth point was argued, and the Hornets won the argument, final point, and the Doubles District Title, 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7-2).
The final Chillicothe spot was filled by Brandon Lamp and Lane Bonderer. They drew one of those tough doubles teams, Savannah's number one Craig Helm and Chase Furgison, and were defeated 1-6, 2-6.
A "GREAT" day of tennis for the young tennis team. After losing Tuesday to the eventual district team winner Savannah, the majority of the doubles seeds went to the top doubles teams of our opponents. In the singles competition it was a given Gabe was going to win and take his record to 20-0, but the second place title was up for grabs. Nathan Sims played with determination and beat the stubborn Savannah player in three hours. Nathan never trailed in the match and finally secured his sectional spot by winning on his sixth match point of the contest. Nate McKiddy and Garrett Peterson saved their best doubles performance for the district competition. Against tough opponents the Hornet team controlled the first two matches. In the final, the Hornet pair began losing confidence and composure when they relinquished their second set lead, but they remained mentally tough and prevailed. Congratulations Hornets. They will return to Cameron on Monday, May 19 at 4:00 to play their sectional matches.
