(Story by Coach Lance Harvey)
No team is ever happy with a loss, but the
Chillicothe Lady Hornets Soccer team was able to walk away with
several positives after suffering a 10-0 defeat at the hands of
perennial state powerhouse, Smithville, on Tuesday.
After falling behind by a score of 2-0 early, the
Hornets attempted to get into a defensive rhythm against the very
skilled Warrior offense. Smithville managed to add five more goals
but were held scoreless for the last twelve minutes of the first
half. Chillicothe came out after halftime and continued to play
solid defense by not allowing any goals for the first 16 minutes.
Eventually, Smithville was able to find the back of the net and with
three goals were able to end the contest in the 71st minute.
Coach Harvey assessed the game in these words. "I
was so proud of our girls for the way they played. The never gave up
even after falling behind big. Smithville is one of the best high
school teams you will see. They are skilled at every position.
Tonight we challenged them and the things the girls learned about
the game and the adjustments they were able to make will definitely
help us as the season progresses. We were better at the end of the
game than we were when we started. That's all I can ask of them, to
play hard and to work to get better. If we do that every practice
and every game we will be alright."
Due to a postponement of Thursday's game against
Excelsior Springs until April 24th, the Lady Hornets next game
will be at St. Joe Benton on Monday.
