(Story by Coach Lance Harvey)
The Chillicothe Lady Hornets soccer team got back into the win column on Monday evening with a 8-1 road victory over St. Joe Benton.
Offensively the Hornets controlled the possession of the ball most of the first half and outshot the Cardinals 9-2. The offense was led by central midfielder, Lindy Saunders, who rang up four goals and two assists, and also one goal apiece from forward Miranda Mammen and winger Mariah Cox. The defense neutralized most of Benton's attack with their aggressiveness and communication in the middle of the field. The lone Cardinal goal occurred in the fortieth minute of the first half when Benton midfielder Timberlee Wilkerson headed in a nice cross off of a corner kick.
In the second half, Chillicothe continued to dominate the game offensively. Saunders added another goal and senior Megan Dominique finished on a beautiful pass from Natalie Minnick to round out the scoring. Although the Hornets only managed two goals in the second half they did outshoot Benton 15-2, just missing on several opportunities.
Coach Harvey noted that the wing play of Cox and Dominque and the diagonal runs provided by Mammen and Karson Keithley, really spread the defense and allowed our midfielders and forwards to have space in the middle. We put together some really good runs and played the ball into space which created several scoring opportunities. Lindy is really settling into the central mid position after moving back from a forward spot and our defense was really solid tonight. This was a great win, a total team effort.
