4/18 - 19/2014 Moberly Tournament 1st Place
(Story by Coach Lance Harvey)
Chillicothe finished in first place in the Red Division of the
Moberly Lady Spartan Invitational over the weekend.
Friday night against Southern Boone High Schoo, Chillicothe scored a
3-1 victory. Karson Keithley scored the opening goal on an assist by
Sam Baldwin which spilt the defenders and was pushed just inside the
left goal post by Keithley. Southern Boone answered shortly with a
goal but 10 minutes later Baldwin again split the defense and found
Lindy Saunders who finished in the right side of the Southern Boone
net. Chillicothe controlled possession most of the second half and
Saunders scored again by moving the ball past three defenders and
hitting a left footed shot past the keeper.
The team communicated well all night and the defense
neutralized the attack of Southern Boone.
On Saturday Chillicothe opened up against Moberly's JV and made
short work of the game by scoring 10 and invoking the mercy rule
with 12 minutes left in the game. Saunders had four goals in limited
minutes. Keithley added three and an assist and Natalie Minnick,
Hannah Jones and Mariah Cox all added goals to set the score.
Goalkeeper Jaylene Sturguess was untested and recorded her first
shutout of the season.
In the final game of the round robin, the Lady Hornets faced a
very physical Mexico team. Chillicothe scored in the 12th minute on
a shot from Saunders that found its way through the defense and was
collected by Cox, who put the ball into the back of the net. The
rest of the half was scoreless as Chillicothe's defense managed to
keep Mexico from mounting any serious attack past midfield. At the
start of the second half with Chillicothe needing to add a goal to
give themselves some breathing room, Keithley received the ball from
about forty yards out from goal. Using her speed she pushed the past
the middle of the defense and despite hard contact from two Mexico
defenders, finished with a hard shot past the keeper's left side.
The Lady Hornets kept possession for most of the rest of the half
and used smart game management to keep Mexico from getting any
offense going. The game ended with that 2-0 score and Sturguess
collecting her second shutout in as many games.
Coaches Harvey and Grable praised the overall team effort.
"Playing three games in less than 24 hours is really tough. I canít
say enough about the winning attitude and effort that each and every
one of these girls exhibited. We came here to bring home a first
place trophy and that's what the girls did. Itís a great day for our
program and I couldn't be prouder of the way our girls played and
Four Lady Hornets were named to the All- Tournament team; Lindy
Saunders, Karson Keithley, Sam Baldwin and Baily Fox.
The Hornets play their next game at home against Cameron on
Monday at 4:30.
