Story by Coach Lance Harvey
Chillicothe defeated Cameron in a Class 1 District 16 first round matchup on Monday evening by a score of 3-0. Playing in windy conditions with gusts up to 30 mph, the Hornets were able to keep the ball on the ground and take advantage of opportunities in front of the goal and on corner kicks. Playing into the wind the Hornets were able to keep possession in the first half and turn away Cameron's attempts to use the wind to push the ball long behind the defense. The half ended with a 0-0 score.
In the second half Chillicothe's offense really started clicking and in the 44th minute, defensive pressure by senior forward Miranda Mammen forced a turnover which was collected by Lindy Saunders. Saunders cut to her left in front of a defender and put a hard shot into the back of the net to put the Hornets on the board. The score remained 1-0 for the next 13 minutes until Saunders again intercepted a ball and drove to goal. As the defenders converged, she slid a pass to Mammen who was making a run from the opposite side. Mammen made a nice first touch and hit a low shot into the corner. Three minutes later Chillicothe tallied again, this time on a corner kick. Saunders sent in a high cross that settled at the foot of junior defender Hallee Jones who volleyed the ball into the upper right portion of the goal.
"Considering the conditions, I would say that producing a shutout is a testament to how well our defense played. The communicated well and you could see that they are really starting to trust each other. Mariah, Hannah and Megan were super active in the midfield and they really got our offense rolling tonight."
