Lady Hornets Head
Coach Ed Douglas says: "The Hornets won a closer match
against Savannah than the final score indicated. The final
score Monday was 7-2, but a one point in the match it looked
like Savannah might pull off an upset. The Hornets won at # 1
and #2 positions as always with Sydnie Whiteside and Ali
Stephens both winning 8-0. From there it didn't look too good.
The Hornets knew going in it would be tough because we won
last year's match that determined the Conference Championship
5-4 with a 9-7 win at #5 singles. This year it looked like the
Hornets might lose #3 through #6. Kelly Westphal (C) lost an
extremely long match 4-8 at #3. Therese Taylor (C) lost a
heart breaker 8-9 (5-7) at #6. At number # 4 position Jozie
Reeter (C) was down 1-6 and Chelsea Long (C) was tied 6-6. It
really looked like we could be down 2-4 going into the
doubles. But Chelsea then went up 7-6 and on her fifth match
point pulled out the match 8-6. Jozie amazingly came back from
down 1-6 to win 9-8 (7-3). Those were both big wins. The girls
knew we had to win one of those matches to win the overall
match and they both pulled them out. Chelsea battled through
adversity and Jozie pulled off an amazing come back. Instead
of being down 2-4 going into the doubles the Hornets were up
4-2 and with that finished the match strong winning all three
doubles. Therese and Kelly played especially well at #3
doubles.
This put the Hornets 4-1 in duals and either 2-0 or 3-0 in the
Conference depending on whether or not the Cameron match
counted toward conference (Hornets play Cameron twice and I am
not sure which one is the conference match). For all practical
purposes tomorrow's match against Lafayette will be even
closer than Savannah. Lafayette has beaten Benton and LeBlond
already and against common opponents Lafayette has played
closer than Savannah so I expect tomorrow's match to go down
to the wire. Tomorrows match is in St Joe. The Hornets
Invitational is played at Danner all day Wednesday with 3
other teams. |
