Ali Stephens upset #1 teammate Syndie Whiteside 10-8 to
win the singles title of the Chillicothe invitational. Stephens beat
Souder of Trenton 10-0 and Baldwin of Battle High of Columbia 10-0
to advance to the finals. Whiteside beat Calicotte of Carrollton
10-0 and Schultz of Battle High of Columbia 10-2 to advance to the
finals.
In the Doubles tournament, Derry/Fender of Trenton
narrowly edged Chillicothe's Kelly Westphal and Jozie Reeter 11-10,
winning the tiebreaker 7-4 for the championship. Westphal and Reeter
beat a Trenton team 10-6 and a Carrollton team 10-1 to advance to
the finals.
Chillicothe's Chelsea Long and Therese Taylor lost to
Derry and Fender in the first round 5-10, beat a team from Battle
6-4 then lost to a Trenton team 7-9 to finish 6th.
Lady Hornets Head Coach Ed Douglas said: "Chillicothe won the
team event over Trenton, Battle (Columbia) and Carrolton. Ali
Stephens and Sydnie Whiteside finished 1st and 2nd
respectively in the 8 player singles tournament with Ali
winning a very close match 10-8. "Ali played very in this
tournament defeating a very good Battle player in the semis
and then beating teammate Sydnie for the first time." "Ali is
a great player and sooner or later she was
going to beat Sydnie." "it happened today and I think it will
only help the rivalry and make then both better in the long
run." The two are very good friends off the court by fierce
rivals on the court.
In doubles the Hornet team of Jozie Reeter and Kelly
Westphal finished second in the 8 team doubles tournament
losing 11-10 (7-4). The girls played very well winning their
first two matches before losing a very close heartbreaker to
the Trenton #1 team. Therese Taylor and Chelsea Long won a
match also and finished 6th. |
