Coach Ed Douglas says: "The Hornet
finished second in the 8 team Excelsior Springs tournament
Wednesday in Excelsior. Sydnie Whiteside won the #1 Singles
winning four matches and losing none. Ali Stephens was also
4-0 at the #2 singles and finished first. Sydnie defeated a
very tough girl from Richmond in the finals 8-4. Sydnie
played very well and this was a really good win. Ali dominated
as always at the #2 position. At the #1 doubles position Kelly
Westphal and Chelsie Long won 3 matches and lost 1 to finish
3rd and medaled. They lost a tough match 8-6 to Kearney #1
team. Jozie Reeter and Therese Taylor also medaled and
finished 3rd in the #2 division with a 3-1 record. Candice
Callahan and Kiara Botts won a match at the# 3 doubles and
finished 6th in their division. The Hornets finished only a
point away from first place Kearney at 17 to 16 overall
victories. Platte County finished third several victories
behind. "We were very close to winning the tournament. I
actually think in a dual match we would have beaten any of the
other 7 teams because in a dual we can double back Sydnie and
Ali in doubles and win two more matches in each match in
addition to their singles wins but in this format Sydnie and
Ali only allowed to play singles." Overall we were very
pleased to finish second as a team and finish first in in #1
and #2 singles and third in #1 and #2 doubles. It was a
beautiful day and we were able to play lots of matches which
will help us down the road by helping us get better. |
