Lady Hornets Head
Coach Ed Douglas says: "The Lady Hornets accomplished another
one of their goals by winning the District Championship
Wednesday at Danner with a 5-2 victory over Savannah. "I knew
this would be a very close match based on our earlier match
against Savannah.
"In our first match with them we won three extremely
close matches that could have had the entire match end up in
their favor. Expecting it to close was accurate. At one point
we had lost at #3 Singles, 0-6 1-6 and had lost at #6 Singles
1-6 6-3 3-6 and were down at #5 singles 2--6 2-5 and at #3 our
player had been defeated pretty decisively the last time we
played them so I thought we might go down 4 matches to 2 into
the doubles (#1 and #2 singles had won for us).
"This would have been a very precarious situation and
would have more than likely meant we would lose the match. But
Kelly Westphal at #3 played clearly her best match of the
season and beat a very good Savannah player
6-4 6-2. Again, the Savannah girl had beaten Kelly previously
8-4 so Kelly really played great and at the exact right time.
Once we won that match I felt that even if we went into the
doubles tied at 3-3 we could still win because we had Sydnie
Whiteside and Ali Stephen, who had both won their singles
easily (as always), split up in doubles giving us a great
chance in those two doubles. But it got easier when Jozie
Reeter who was down 5-7 2-5 came back to win the match 5-7,
7-5 6-2".
" That was an amazing comeback. Down one set and
5-2 in the second set is a huge whole to dig out of but Jozie
did." "And then Sydnie Whiteside and Chelsea Long finished up
the match winning the #1 doubles 6-4 6-3."
"This was a very important win for our team. Now
we have won the Conference with a 6-0 record, won individually
1st and 2nd in Conference Singles and 1st and 4th in
Conference Doubles and know won the Team District.
" This win put the Lady Hornets at 14-2 for the
season in team competition. Thursday at Home is Individual
District starting at 9 am and running all day at Danner. 'We
hope fans will come out and see the Individual District which
should run from 9 am to 3 or 4 pm." It is great to be able to
have District at Home. Team Sectional is also at Home on
Saturday the 19th." |
