Story by Ed Douglas
The Lady Hornets, as expected were not able to
overcome powerhouse Barstow in the Team Sectionals and lost 5-0 to
finish out their team season. " Barstow was second in the State last
year and has already beaten the team they lost to in the finals this
year. Their #1 player won the State Singles Championship last year
and she is playing with their #2 player in doubles this year and I
expect them to win the State Doubles. Their #3 and #4 players
qualified for the State Singles. I expect them to win the State team
title this year."
"Our expectation was to give a great effort today and
prepare for the individual State Tournament for next week.
Additionally, it is a great experience to get to play a team like
this. That experience will help us next year."
"I thought our girls played as well as they could and am very proud
of them. "
With the loss to Barstow in the Sectionals that put our
team record to 14-3. We have won the MEC Conference for the 2nd year
in a row, won the District tournament, and qualified 2 singles
players and a doubles team for the individual State Tournament. By
any standard it has been a terrific year and if we had to lose the
team match in Sectionals it is nice to know we lost to the eventual
State Champion (my best guess). In the other match played at 10 am,
Grain Valley defeated St Pius 5-0. Then in the finals Barstow
defeated Grain Valley 5-1.
Next up for the girls is the Individual State
tournament this next Friday and Saturday with Sydnie Whiteside and
Ali Stephens playing singles and Chelsea Long and Kelly Westphal
playing doubles.
