3/26/15 Chillicothe 9, at Excelsior Springs 1

Story by Coach Bob Long
Thursday, March 26 the Chillicothe Hornets Boys' tennis team (2-0) defeated Excelsior Springs 8-1. Excelsior Springs had not lost a regular season dual match in over a year (with several new varsity Tiger players), the Hornet squad brought their streak to an end. All six varsity singles matches initiated the contest. Gabe Poling led the sweep in singles with an 8-0 win over the competitive Casey Williams. Nate McKiddy followed with an impressive 8-0 victory against Aden Allen. Lucas Rogers of Excelsior played hard til the end, but senior Garrett Peterson won 8-1. Brandon Lamp of Chillicothe won seven straight games after beginning 1-1, to defeat Clint Hurshman 8-1. Cody Evans battled Lane Rogers back and forth, until pulling away and winning 8-6. Lane Bonderer defeated Jacob Crouse 8-3 to complete the sweep.
To the credit of the Excelsior Springs Tigers and their coaching staff, although the outcome of the dual had been decided, they continued to compete in all the singles and doubles matches. Nate McKiddy and Garrett Peterson teamed up to defeat Casey Williams and Aden Allen 9-7. Nate and Garrett led the entire match but the Tiger duo would not retreat. Eventually, what looked destined for a tie-breaker, fell the Hornets direction. Gabe Poling and Lane Bonderer defeated Lucas Rogers and Jacob Crouse 8-2. Gabe and Lane, still getting use to each other began slowly at 3-2, but settled down to win the final five games. Brandon Lamp and Cody Evans discovered the Excelsior Springs pair of Clint Hurshman and Lane Rogers weren't swayed by their singles losses. The tiger duo gave Excelsior Springs their lone victory, winning 8-3.
The score 8-1 indicates a blow out, but all of the matches were competitive. The Hornet players demonstrated a lot of patience against the Tigers. It was a good win for the team, and shed light on several areas we need to improve upon.
