3/31/15 at Marshall 8, Chillicothe 1

Story by Coach Bob Long
The Chillicothe Hornets (2-1) boys' tennis team played at Marshall Tuesday, March 31. The Owls defeated the Hornets 8-1 in varsity play.  Gabe Poling claimed the Hornets lone victory for the second straight year, defeating Gerritt Murphy 10-6.  Gabe remained poised as he lost his first games of the season and was behind briefly.  After falling behind 4-5, Gabe dictated play and won 6 of the last 7 games. Garrett Peterson, playing in the number two spot, battled Jack Hemeyer closely, before falling 6-10. Isaac Summers, Marshall's number one player in 2014, defeated Nate McKiddy 10-1.  Brandon Lamp, Cody Evans and Steen Anthony each lost 3-10 to their opponents Jude Staley, John Hadley and Dustin Blankenship respectively.
In doubles play, Garrett and Nate received good experience against the talented Gerritt Murphy and Jack Hemeyer. Newly formed doubles partners Gabe Poling and Steen Anthony, came back from being down 3-6, but eventually fell 9-11 to the seniors Jude Staley and John Hadley.  Brandon Lamp and Cody Evans fought hard, but were defeated 5-10 by Owls Isaac Summers and Dustin Blankenship.
Marshall has an excellent program and to the Hornets credit, they didn't give in.  In most of the varsity matches, the Chillicothe squad played their best tennis after being down. Gabe Poling was pushed in singles and Garrett Peterson frustrated his singles opponent for the majority of the contest.  Brandon Lamp, Cody Evans and Steen Anthony continue to improve. The Hornets travel to Cameron on Wednesday to play in the Cameron Invitational Tournament.
