Hornets Tennis
4/14/15 at Chillicothe 5, St Joseph Bishop LeBlond 4

Story by Coach Bob Long
The Chillicothe Hornet tennis team (5-1) hosted the Bishop LeBlond Golden Eagles at Daryl Danner Memorial Park. After splitting the singles competition, the Hornets won two of the three doubles matches to claim the victory 5-4. Senior Gabe Poling defeated the competitive Steven Mears 8-1. Garrett Peterson gained a sizable lead against LeBlond's John Lierz 7-4, but Lierz battled back to push the match into a tie-breaker and eventually won 9-8 (7-3). Nate McKiddy defeated Spencer Joe 8-0 and Brandon Lamp beat Teddy Sommers 8-2. Hornet junior Cody Evans battled back and forth with Andy Burns of LeBlond, before losing control at the end 7-9. Lane Bonderer lost in a tie-breaker to Sean Davis 8-9 (4-7).
In doubles, the number one team of Garrett Peterson and Nate McKiddy took the court as the other Hornet teams were finishing up and sealing the win. Peterson and McKiddy lost 3-8 to Mears and Lierz of LeBlond. Gabe Poling and Lane Bonderer faced Sommers and Burns in the number two spot. Gabe's dominating play and Lane's athletic ability at the net secured the 8-1 win. Juniors Brandon Lamp and Cody Evans won the eventual deciding match, defeating Joe and Davis 8-4. Brandon and Cody held the lead throughout, but the LeBlond pair didn't give in.
It was difficult to break away from the young and talented LeBlond team. In the three close matches, Chillicothe wound up on the losing end of them all. At times, senior Garrett Peterson, and juniors Cody Evans and Lane Bonderer appeared to have their matches in hand, but the Eagles found ways to come out on top. All of the Hornet doubles teams are competitive, but securing the second doubles win and the team victory was a relief. We will certainly battle LeBlond again in the St Joseph tournament and the MEC conference tournament. The Hornets face Cameron Monday, April 20 at Danner Park.
