Hornets Tennis
5/12/15 District Team Semifinals

(Story by Coach Robert Long)
The Chillicothe Hornets Tennis Team (14-2) began post season play against the Richmond Spartans at home. Richmond had defeated Trenton 5-4 on Monday. Fresh off of the conference championship and individual conference singles and doubles victories, it was back to business. The Hornets beat the Spartans 5-0. Gabe Poling defeated Chase Shipley 6-0, 6-1, making it 23-0 on the season. Nate McKiddy beat fellow lefty Codey Briant 6-0, 6-3. Nate is now 12-1 in singles on the season. Brandon Lamp beat Ryan Sander 6-0, 6-0. Brandon's visiting family didn't get to watch a lot of tennis, but their presence was appreciated. Cody Evans won 6-2, 6-2 against Joseph Briant. Lane Bonderer defeated Bradley Sawyer 6-1, 6-1. Cody won the fifth and deciding match. In district play, once the outcome has been decided, all other play is halted. Garrett Peterson was playing Javier Lozano a foreign exchange student from Mexico. Javier lost to Nate McKiddy in a tie-breaker on April 7 in Chillicothe. Once again Javier refused to take defeat easily. Garrett lost the first set 4-6, then rebounded to a 5-0 commanding lead in the second set. Garrett won the second set 6-2. The third set would have been entertaining, but the match was over and the senior laden Richmond squad had baccalaureate at seven.
Chillicothe faces Cameron Wednesday at 4:00 pm in Daryl Danner Park. Cameron defeated the number two seed Excelsior Springs 5-4 on Tuesday. The Hornets beat the Dragons 8-1 at home on April 20. Cameron has had several good wins since the previous meeting and a win would give them a .500 record not to mention a district championship. Savannah awaits the winner of the district 15 champion.
