Hornets Tennis
5/22/15 Team Sectionals/Quarterfinals

Story by Coach Bob Long
The Chillicothe Hornet's Tennis(16-3) season came to a close on Friday. The Hornets made it to the quarterfinals for the sixth time in team history, but their progress was brought to a halt by Barstow. The sectional was played in Marshall on Friday to avoid the rain forecasted for Saturday.
Chillicothe was matched against conference rival Savannah, with the winner to face the winner of Barstow vs Marshall. Savannah was unable to attend. Chillicothe had beaten Savannah 5-4 in the regular season. After a couple of seniors had family obligations to fulfill, Coach Traci Westfall attempted to put together a complete team to no avail.
Barstow defeated Marshall 5-0 in the round of 16. Having lost to Marshall earlier in the season, beating Barstow would be a huge accomplishment. The match began with doubles, state bound Garrett Peterson and Nate McKiddy were defeated 0-8 by Scott Fletcher and Ben Abbas. As a duo Gabe Poling and Lane Bonderer suffered their first defeat of the season against Bradley Frye and Max Gong 1-8. In the third doubles position Brandon Lamp and Cody Evans lost 1-8 to Steven Ketchmark and Brian King.
Needing only two singles victories, Barstow had a commanding lead. Cody Evans and Brandon Lamp each lost 0-6, 0-6 to Brian King and Ben Abbas respectively, to complete the sweep for Barstow. Barstow will play in the state semi-finals on Thursday, May 28. Despite the lop-sided match there were some positives. The Hornets settled down in the singles, making far less unforced errors. Lane Bonderer, Nate McKiddy and Gabe Poling were all playing competitive singles matches when play was halted.
Gabe will compete in the state singles competition beginning on Friday, May 29 along with doubles teammates Garrett Peterson and Nate McKiddy. All of the Hornet losses on the season came at the hands of state playoff teams, Kirksville, Marshall, and Barstow.
