The Chillicothe Hornet's Tennis(16-3) season came to a
close on Friday. The Hornets made it to the quarterfinals for
the sixth time in team history, but their progress was brought
to a halt by Barstow. The sectional was played in Marshall on
Friday to avoid the rain forecasted for Saturday.
Chillicothe was matched against conference rival
Savannah, with the winner to face the winner of Barstow vs
Marshall. Savannah was unable to attend. Chillicothe had
beaten Savannah 5-4 in the regular season. After a couple of
seniors had family obligations to fulfill, Coach Traci
Westfall attempted to put together a complete team to no
Barstow defeated Marshall 5-0 in the round of 16.
Having lost to Marshall earlier in the season, beating Barstow
would be a huge accomplishment. The match began with doubles,
state bound Garrett Peterson and Nate McKiddy were defeated
0-8 by Scott Fletcher and Ben Abbas. As a duo Gabe Poling and
Lane Bonderer suffered their first defeat of the season
against Bradley Frye and Max Gong 1-8. In the third doubles
position Brandon Lamp and Cody Evans lost 1-8 to Steven
Ketchmark and Brian King.
Needing only two singles victories, Barstow had a
commanding lead. Cody Evans and Brandon Lamp each lost 0-6,
0-6 to Brian King and Ben Abbas respectively, to complete the
sweep for Barstow. Barstow will play in the state semi-finals
on Thursday, May 28. Despite the lop-sided match there were
some positives. The Hornets settled down in the singles,
making far less unforced errors. Lane Bonderer, Nate McKiddy
and Gabe Poling were all playing competitive singles matches
when play was halted.
Gabe will compete in the state singles competition
beginning on Friday, May 29 along with doubles teammates
Garrett Peterson and Nate McKiddy. All of the Hornet losses on
the season came at the hands of state playoff teams,
Kirksville, Marshall, and Barstow.
