For one half of football, Chillicothe had the two-time
defending state champions against the ropes, however Maryville
fought back in the second half to take a 50-28 district
semifinal win over Chillicothe.
Chillicothe scored on their opening possession to take a 6-0
lead. After holding Maryville to three plays and punt, the
Hornets engineered another long time consuming 16 play scoring
drive and two point conversion to take a 14-0 lead in the
second.
Maryville answered with a quick 3 play drive.
Chillicothe held Maryville to 3 and out again, but this time
Chance Holcer fought through the line to block the punt.
Chillicothe took over on the 18 yard line but a key
play following 4th down on the 8 yard line proved to be the
turning point.
The official looked at the spot and called it a failed
4th down with out measuring. The ball was re-spotted at the
hash mark before Chillicothe asked for a measurement. The
chain showed a Chillicothe 1st down by half a length of the
foot.
For Maryville, the unusual turn of events light a fire
under them. They stopped Chillicothe for no gain on two
running plays, then recovered a Chillicothe fumble to halt the
drive late in the 2nd quarter.
Chillicothe took a 14-8 lead into halftime, the first
team to do so against Maryville this season. The second half
provided to be a nightmare for the Hornets.
Chillicothe lost two fumbles, threw three interceptions
and missed on a fake punt attempt. All of them were turned
into Maryville touchdowns in the second half.
The Hornets proved their fight when they finished
a 10 play 61 yard drive with a touchdown with 31 seconds left,
then recovered a fumble and scored again with 3 seconds left
in the game. |
