Story by Coach Bob Long
Chillicothe Lady Hornet, Hannah Leamer, traveled to
Springfield Monday and Tuesday for state golf competition at the
Rivercut Golf Course. Hannah placed 49th out of the field of 88 with
a 36 hole score of 191. She placed 51st in 2013 with a score of 201
at the Sedalia Country Club course.
Mary Institute and St Louis Country Day school took top
team honors with scores of 330 and 334, for a two day total of 664.
Medalist, Ashley Childers of Mt. Vernon, shot 72 and 73.
On Monday, Hannah struck the ball as well as I've seen
her hit all year. She was a little unlucky with the wet course
conditions and the wavy fairways, causing her ball to wind up in a
couple of sand bunkers. She recorded a 48 going out and a 49 back
in. She played the long par 5's particularly good. Hannah didn't hit
a stray drive the entire day.
On Tuesday, Hannah wasn't able to continue striking the
ball as precisely, possibly due to the wet and windy conditions, but
her short game more than made up for it. On the two tiered 10th
green, she holed a 15 foot double breaking putt to salvage a bogey.
On the par 3 sixth hole (with river to the left and unplayable
short), Hannah hit the ball 8 feet from the hole.
On the signature par 3 fifteenth, island green, Hannah
for the second day in a row hit her ball about five feet from the
hole. Having shot par on the hole Monday, she stepped up and knocked
down the birdie putt, a fitting way to cap off the final round of
her high school career. Hannah continued to set goals and achieve
them.
Going to state for the second year in a row, shooting
less than 200 on the tough course, improving her score on day two,
and playing her best nine of the competition (46) to complete her
career. Hannah always the level headed competitor was also the
nicest person on the course (anticipates meeting a life long friend
out of each foursome). |
