Lady Hornets Head
Coach Ed Douglas says: "The Lady Hornets lost to Marshall 5-4
Thursday at Marshall. The doubles was played first and the
Hornets won at #1 with Whiteside and Stephens as expected and
won at #3 with Long and Downing who played a really good
doubles match for us. So up 2-1 going into the doubles the
Hornets needed to win 3 of the 6 singles to win the match.
With the # 2 and #4 player in the State playing at #1 and #2
you have to feel great about those matches and we did win
them. It is nearly impossible for another team to win beat us
at #1 and #2. Ali won easily at #2 but Sydnie match was a
battle. The #1 girl from Marshall played Sydnie very close
twice last year including the State Tournament where Crawford
from Marshall finished 5th in the State. Crawford is really
good but Sydnie is better and she won 10-7 in a really good
match. So we had to win 1 of the remaining 4 to win the match
and we didn’t do it. “ I can’t say that I was not disappointed
by the loss. I knew Marshall would be good but I thought we
were the better team and I still think we are but we certainly
were not on this day. You have to give Marshall credit for
restocking with some new players who defeated our more
experienced players. There is no question our girls wanted to
win and played as hard as they could but on this day we needed
one more player to step up and raise their game to meet the
challenge and it just didn’t happen. I like to think there is
a silver lining to this loss, although it is hard to think in
those terms at this moment. Possibly the silver lining is this
match doesn’t affect our Conference or District goals or
sending multiple individuals to the State Tournament. It does
show us that we are not where we need to be and we will need
to step up our work to get there. I think our players will
step up their commitment from here as a result of this loss.
Although I don’t like to make excuses or taking anything away
from Marshall who beat us fair and square and just out played
us as a team, as I watched us play I think it is possible the
girls struggled a little physically and mentally playing 4
matches in 4 days (3 on the road) and that may have been a
factor . No matter how much you want to push your body,
sometimes it just doesn’t respond like you would want after
that many matches. But the schedule is the schedule and I
still thought we would win but that is sports. We will somehow
learn from it and use it as motivation to get better.”
