Story by Coach Bob Long
The Chillicothe Hornets Girls' Golf team (4-1)
participated in the Central Invitational Tournament held at St Joseph's
Moila Golf Course. The Hornets totaled a team score of 475 and placed 13th
in the 15 team field. Liberty High School won the event with a score of
351. Park Hill's Sam Paulak won the medalist honors with a score of 80.
Senior Grace Venner recorded the Hornets low score of
107, placing 33rd in the 73 player field. Grace began the day playing her
best golf. She began with a bogie on her beginning hole number 7 and
followed with a birdie chip in on the par 3 number 8. Grace also parred
holes 10 and 13, then the rains came and she wasn't able to reclaim her
early form. Senior Lauren Mason shot a 113 including a par on the par 3
17th hole. The seventeenth hole has water on the left and out of bounds on
the right. Lauren hit a perfect tee shot onto the green, her first putt
went to about four feet of the hole. Her par putt momentarily rested on
the edge of the cup, as coach and player waited in suspense, gravity
eventually won out, followed by celebration. Sophomore Hannah Sherrow shot
a 124 in her first 18 hole tournament. Hannah has been the most improved
player this season and continues to work hard improving her game. Freshmen
Lexi Hargrave and Maddie Lamp scored a 133 and 137 respectively. Lexi has
an effortless swing that is enjoyable to watch. On the 10th tee box, her
drive sounded clean. In the middle of the fairway two thirds of the way to
the hole was one ball. With a smile, Lexi took claim of the ball. Maddie
Lamp experienced her first varsity match in a 15 team 18 hole tournament,
which included players in her group from Libery and Liberty North. In the
unfamiliar environment, Maddie experienced pouring rain(she hit two
excellent shots in the rain), excessive heat, a six mile hike with thirty
pounds of clubs, and stiff competition. She continued hitting good shots
throughout the round and played her best golf toward the end of the day.
The tournament revealed the inexperience of the Hornet
squad. Seniors Grace Venner and Lauren Mason continue to lead the scoring.
With home course advantage at conference and districts the Hornets have
ambition of moving up the leader board. The Hornets appear next in the
Platte County tournament Wednesday, September 9. |
