Story by Coach Bob Long
The Chillicothe Hornets Girls' Golf team hosted the
thirteen team Chillicothe Invitational at Green Hills Golf Course.
Hamilton's Sam Cornelius won medalist honors beating out Kirksville's
Emily Van Rie in a tie-breaker, both with a score of 83. Chillicothe's
Lauren Mason placed twelfth, Grace Venner sixteenth, and Courtney Reger
twenty fifth out of the 57 participants. The Hornets finished fourth as a
team with a score of 424. Richmond won with a 357, followed by Moberly's
390, and Maryville with a 402.
Chillicothe senior Grace Venner shot a 101. Grace
pared the first, thirteenth, and sixteenth holes. Senior Lauren Mason led
the Hornets with a round of 100, her best score. Lauren had a terrific
day, paring holes five, eight, eleven, twelve, and sixteen. Senior
Courtney Reger continued her magnificent play with a score of 106. On
Wednesday, Courtney hit her tee shot rolling by the pin on hole number
eight eventually paring the hole. Thursday, Courtney's tee ball came to
rest approximately ten feet short of the pin. Her first putt was within
inches of dropping for an eagle, resulting in a two putt birdie. Along
with the birdie on hole number eight, Courtney pared hole numbers two,
ten, and eighteen. Sophomore Hannah Sherrow finished with a 117 and
freshman Lexi Hargrave shot a 120, including par on the par 3 eleventh
hole.
Four Hornet junior varsity players joined the
competition. Freshman Maddie Lamp shot a 121 in her second eighteen hole
tournament. Freshman Lauren Price shot a 140. Riley Brobst shot par on the
par 4 eighth hole on her way to a score of 113. The fourth freshman junior
varsity player, Hannah Haakonstad, shot a 127, also paring the eighth
hole. The junior varsity played well in the first eighteen hole tournament
for all of them but Maddie.
I want to thank Craig Sager and his crew at Green Hills
Golf Course for making the tournament a success. The Hornets have two more
tournaments at home, the MEC tournament on Monday and the District
tournament on Monday, September 28. The team had their best group effort
of the season. Seniors Grace, Lauren and Courtney are all playing their
best and underclassmen Hannah Sherrow and Lexi Hargrave continue to play
consistent and improve gradually. With several freshman gaining
experience, the team has potential for the next few years. |
