Story by Coach Bob Long
The Chillicothe Hornets Girls' Golf team sent three
players to Cameron to compete in sectionals. Seniors Grace Venner and
Courtney Reger, along with sophomore Hannah Sherrow. Grace and Hannah shot
116, followed by a 117 for Courtney. Grace in her second year of
qualifying for sectionals, got out to a tough beginning, but was able to
recover slightly on the back nine with a 54. Grace parred holes 16 and 5.
Courtney parred the tough par 5 seventeenth hole. The qualifying score was
98, so both seniors brought their seasons to a close. Hannah parred the
second hole and birdied the ninth hole (her final hole, since she started
on the back nine). On her second shot a tree blocked her view of the
green, but she decided to go for it. The ball went cleanly through the
tree and landed on the edge of the green next to the fringe. With
approximately a ten foot putt remaining, Sherrow hit the ball on the
perfect line, but it remained on the edge of the cup momentarily, until
gravity won out and it dropped in for a birdie. Savannah won the team
competition with a 381 followed by Brookfield's 383. Mollie Holtman of
Maryville was the medalist with a round of 78. Emily VanRie of Kirksville
finished second with a score of 79. The Hornets will miss varsity seniors
Grace Venner, Lauren Mason and Courtney Reger, along with junior varsity
senior Courtney Johnson. With sophomore Hannah Sherrow returning and six
freshman: Lexi Hargrave, Maddie Lamp, Lauren Price, Hannah Haakonstad,
Riley Brobst, and Emma Hurtgen, the team has potential success for the
future. |
