(Story by Coach Lance Harvey)
The Chillicothe Lady
Hornets evened their record at 2-2 with a 6-2 victory over St.
Joe Benton on Monday night. The Hornets were on their heels
early when a a defensive breakdown allowed Benton to
capitalize with a goal in the second minute of play. After
some adjusting to the natural turf, Chillicothe settled down
and were able to get an equalizing goal from freshman Maggie
Pfaff. Just one minute later Josefin Hjelmaeng placed a corner
kick into the top corner of the net to make the score 2-1. In
the 25th minute junior Karson Keithley gathered a free kick
from Sarah Graves and pushed the ball past the keeper.
Chillicothe generated a few more scoring opportunities but
were unable to tally. They went into halftime with a 3-1 lead.
The second half started out well for Chillicothe as
senior Natalie Minnick hit a shot that caromed off the head of
a Benton defender and went into the net. Benton answered back
seven minutes later to make the score 4-2. That is when
Chillicothe's offense started to dominate the worn down St.
Joe defense, making several attempts on goal. Karson
Keithley tallied her second goal of the game on a one on one
run to goal beating the Benton keeper despite being fouled in
the act. Keithley finished the scoring and completed her hat
trick when Benton failed to clear the ball from in front of
the goal and she hit a low shot past the keeper. Chillicothe's
defense was able to hold off any scoring opportunities from
the Cardinals and walked away with the 6-2 win.
