Lady Hornets 2nd at St Joe Benton Tournament
9/4/2015 2 wins 1 loss
Coach Amanda Marsh comments:
"We were the 3rd seed, Platte County 1st and
Maryville 2nd. We played LeBlond in the first round and won easily. We
then played a very good Maryville team. The score doesn't show how
difficult it was for us. They are extremely consistent.
" Kelly Westphal came from being behind 1-6 to win 10-7.
Again, she never gives up.
"Our freshman Gracy Reeter, playing with an injured
finger, lost 10-4 to Maryville's #2 who was their #1 last year. Very proud
of her effort.
"In the championship match, we played an undefeated
Platte County. During the match, Gracy Reeter overheated and was taken by
ambulance to Heartland Hospital where she was given lots of fluids and her
body temp. was taken down. The other girls were very worried about her
during their matches, but did their best to stay focused. Kelly was once
again down, 0-5 and came back, but still lost 8-10. Gipe and Fechtig lead
most of the match, but fell short at the end to lose 9-11. Our constants
for the day were Downing and Minnis. They placed 1st in #1 doubles in the
tournament. They were the only win against Platte County. Rappy and Greg
placed 3rd in #3 doubles, Gipe and Fechtig placed 2nd in #2 doubles, and
the team placed 2nd overall.
"Kelly Westphal did not place due to the make up of the
tournament. You earn points for matches won and the more you win by gives
you more points. For example, winning 10-0 gives you 20 points and winning
10-7 gives you 13 points. Kelly had close matches, so she didn't have
enough points to place. What she did was even better than placing from my
stand point though. We had discussed playing her and Downing together for
this tournament to see how they would do, but before the match, Downing
and Westphal decided it would be better for the team if they split up.
That selfless team attitude is what helped us to place 2nd, but cost Kelly
an individual medal. Not many kids would do that, she is special and we
are very blessed to have her on our team! " |
