Story by Coach

Kelly's singles
record is 22 and 4 for the season. The score Tuesday was 6-3, 6-2.
Kelly played very smart tennis Tuesday against
Excelsior Springs #2 senior player, Maggie Mohn. Mohn has a
beautiful stroke and hits the ball hard. Kelly's focus was to get
everything back. We knew that the longer a point went, the greater
the chances of Kelly winning the point. Kelly is incredibly patient.
She mentally prepares herself for every point by knowing that each
point is going to be a battle and the player that wants it more will
wait for the right shot to put away or their opponent to make a
mistake. Kelly is a solid, mentally tough, competitor. At this point
in the season, most every player has solid strokes, especially at
the level Kelly is competing. It is more about who can keep their
head mentally. If you get down, you can't show it. You have to
maintain a poker face at all times. Kelly does that very well.
Kelly can now say that she has been to state 3 of her 4
years of high school. That is an amazing accomplishment! Kelly has
focused on her doubles game until this season. In tennis, doubles
and singles are very different, so that was not an easy transition.
Kelly just pushes through every point, game, and match, never giving
up. She typically gets down a couple games, figures her opponent out
and then comes back. Losing a couple games tends to light a fire for
her. Kelly never stops learning and striving to be better. That is
rare in a 2 time all state senior tennis player.
Our team holds Kelly in the highest regards. She is an
amazing tennis player, but also a great team leader. Kelly's doubles
partner this year was Gracy Reeter, who is a freshman who had never
played doubles prior to this season. Kelly took on the role of
teammate, partner, and teacher when they became doubles partners.
She did an amazing job! Kelly has left her mark on this tennis team
for many years to come. I am so very thankful to have had the
opportunity to have coached such an outstanding player and to know
this young lady who will do great things in life! |
